Originally built in the early 1970’s, Portland Public Schools closed Clarendon Elementary School in 2007 as part of a district consolidation effort. In early 2014 Merryman Barnes Architects was engaged to work with the district to reopen the school and transform it into an Early Childhood Education Head Start facility serving 124 students and their families. The renovation was a part of a broader effort to both consolidate and expand these services to more of Portland’s pre-school age children. The Clarendon Center brought together several culturally specific head start programs and parent resource programs under one roof.
