The German American Society, a well-established Portland cultural institution, purchased an under-utilized Masonic temple and lodge in the Rose City Park neighborhood and sought to transform it into their new home. We provided the design for a $3 million renovation that knit together three disparate wings: the original structure built in 1914 and two additions dating from 1933 and 1951.
Our work included the restoration of the brick and wood façade, ADA improvements, select structural upgrades, and significant changes to the building’s space plan. We combined auditoria to create a single ballroom with a bridal dressing room and a walled private patio to accommodate indoor / outdoor wedding receptions. Bathrooms were moved and a code compliant catering kitchen was added. Nine new flexible classroom / meeting rooms provide space for German language classes and society meetings, while a basement bar reminiscent of a German “keller” offers a convivial space for members to socialize.
