TriMet teamed with Union Pacific Railroad to replace an obsolete wood pedestrian bridge across the railroad tracks between SE Lafayette and Se Rhine in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Portland, Oregon.
KPFF provided structural and civil engineering design for this 185-ft long custom weathering steel warren truss pedestrian bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks in Portland. Coordinating closely with TriMet and KPFF, Merryman Barnes Architects developed a distinctive design featuring a 12-ft. wide ADA-accessible walkway spanning between two weathering steel and glass elevator towers at both ends which are large enough to accommodate bicycles with trailers. Galvanized steel stair structures access the bridge span directly from the sides in a unique geometry that optimizes the limited landing area on each end by minimizing platforms, vertical support structure and foundations. The design was developed to avoid UPRR crash barrier mandates, and allow stair structures without switchbacks or tight turns.
