This 1960’s three story structure was originally built as dormitory space by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for their teaching staff. When Marylhurst University closed, the Sisters wanted the building renovated and designed as a combination apartments and guest suites for visitors. The existing multistory structure, although in good condition, had not been occupied for years. Concerns for the remodeling included seismic improvements, ADA improvements including an elevator, thermal improvements including replacing existing windows, and removal of asbestos containing materials. Goals included incorporating sustainable features, increasing the energy efficiency of the building, and reducing atmosphere-damaging fossil fuels.
The building was remodeled from 48 sleeping rooms to 8 apartments and 16 guest suites. The wings were zoned to provide privacy for permanent residents and temporary visitors. A new elevator serves every floor and centrally located lounges provide communal space. Exterior patios were refurbished and added to provide outside social space. Seismic improvements were incorporated throughout.
