The Laurelwood Shelter is a urban homeless housing shelter funded by Multnomah County and managed by Transition Projects, Inc. The shelter includes 120 - 125 beds for couples and a separate men’s/women’s dormitory. The shelter’s program also includes onsite management and support services such as a health clinic, counseling, meeting rooms, offices, kitchen, dining room, computer study areas, and laundry facilities.
In addition to providing design services, Merryman Barnes Architects led efforts to understand, respond and successfully address neighborhood concerns and resistance, balancing the need for a humane and welcoming home for shelter inhabitants with security and monitoring needs. Working with the surrounding neighborhood ultimately led to a formal good neighbor agreement and the community’s embrace of this important project in their midst.
