Developed by Farmworker Housing Development Corporation, Nuevo Amanecer is a 90-unit affordable housing complex designed specifically for non-migrant farmworker families living in Woodburn, Oregon. Merryman Barnes worked closely with farm workers and the housing developer to create a development that borrows building and site design principles from both Central American and Pacific Northwest vernaculars.
Three distinct “neighborhoods” were planned within Nuevo Amanecer, each with a different character and focused on a different plaza or park area. The site includes, in addition to housing, a daycare, storage building, half-basketball court, and community gardens, in a design that balances the need for private outdoor spaces with the desire for sociability with the larger community.
Unit types include 2, 3, and 4 bedroom townhouse apartments and ADA accessible units. Scissor trusses were used to create vaulted interior spaces that allow for generous windows and ample daylight inside the units.
